Gilded Copper Mount from Uppåkra – Archaeological Artifact Print
This print features a gilded copper mount, measuring 74 mm in length, discovered at Uppåkra, the largest Iron Age settlement in southern Scandinavia. Dating to the Migration Period (circa 5th–6th century AD), the mount displays intricate craftsmanship and symbolic design elements, likely serving as a decorative fitting on high-status equipment such as a shield, harness, or ceremonial gear.
The figure is believed to represent Völund (Wayland the Smith), the legendary blacksmith of Norse and Germanic mythology. In these stories, Völund is renowned for his exceptional craftsmanship and is known for forging extraordinary objects. He is also associated with a myth of captivity and escape, where he crafts wings to fly to freedom—a detail that may be symbolized in this artifact’s design.
The use of gilding—applying a thin layer of gold over copper—indicates the object’s prestigious function, reflecting the wealth and social status of its owner. Such mounts were not only ornamental but also symbolic, projecting power, affiliation, and identity within Iron Age society.
As part of Uppåkra’s rich archaeological record, this artifact provides valuable insight into the community’s elite culture, artistic traditions, and connections to broader European networks during the Migration Period.
Printed on high-quality archival paper, this reproduction faithfully presents the texture and detail of the original artifact. Suitable for educational environments, offices, or private collections, the print offers a visual connection to the material culture and beliefs of Iron Age Scandinavia.
Völund can be seen in real life at Lund's University Historical Museum, or you can get a print and have Völund in your own home.
