PHOTARCH was among the recipients of Fujifilm's Regional Challenge Grant, and the grant's recipients were invited to exhibit at Fujifilm Square in Tokyo, Fujifilm's flagship gallery in the centre of the city.
It showed PHOTARCH in a setting far from the museum stores and archive rooms where the work usually happens: photographs of ancient artefacts, made under carefully controlled light, hanging in a modern gallery in Tokyo.
The exhibition brought together work from photographers around the world — landscape, documentary, portrait and conceptual — with a shared spirit of experiment and care. Objects from the distant past, shown in one of the world's most forward-looking cities, made the point that heritage photography belongs in the present too.
Thanks to Fujifilm for its support, and for a space where this kind of work can be seen, questioned and discussed.
